Keeping Your Dogs Safe During Summer Heat

Staying safe in the summer heat during dog walks is crucial for the well-being and health of both you and the dogs. Here are a few helpful and highly recommended tips: *Not recommended for temperatures above 85 degrees fahrenheit. In such heat, it is better to stay safely indoors (of course, potty breaks are necessary however). Will provide tips and suggestions for keeping dogs busy and entertained indoors in later post!

Pre-Walk Preparation:

  • Check the weather forecast and plan the walk during the coolest parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening.

  • Ensure you have necessary supplies: leash, waste bags, water bottle, collapsible water bowl, treats, and any required medications.

  • Apply pet-friendly sunscreen, if needed, to dogs with exposed skin.

  • Bring an ample supply of fresh water for both yourself and the dogs. Use the collapsible water bowl for easy access.

  • Encourage dogs to drink water before and during the walk to stay hydrated.

Walking Intensity and Pace:

  • Adjust the pace and intensity of the walk to accommodate the heat. Slow down and allow for more breaks to prevent overheating.

  • Follow the dogs' cues and watch for signs of fatigue or discomfort, such as excessive panting or slowing down.

Rest Breaks:

  • Take frequent breaks in shaded areas to allow the dogs to rest and cool down.

  • Offer water during these breaks and encourage them to relax and catch their breath.

Limited Exposure to Sun:

  • Minimize exposure to direct sunlight by walking in shaded areas or under tree cover as much as possible.

  • Consider using sunshades or protective clothing designed for dogs, particularly for those with lighter coats or sensitive skin.

Paw Pad Protection:

  • Protect the dogs' paw pads from hot surfaces by walking on grassy areas.

  • NEVER use dog booties in hot weather as they trap heat in the paw pads leaving your dog with no way of cooling themselves down.

  • Check their paw pads for any signs of irritation or burns during breaks.

Monitor for Signs of Overheating:

  • Keep a close eye on the dogs for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy.

  • If any signs are observed, find immediate shade, offer water, and consider ending the walk early.

Post-Walk Cool-Down:

  • Return to a shaded area and allow the dogs to rest and cool down before parting ways.

  • Provide access to water and ensure they are comfortable and hydrated.

***Lastly, NEVER, and I mean NEVER, leave a dog in a hot car. It is extremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening.***

Remember, the safety and well-being of the dogs are paramount. If the weather is excessively hot or humid, it may be best to consider shorter walks or indoor playtime instead. Always prioritize their health and comfort, adjusting the agenda as needed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and the dogs.
